The Tell-Tale Light

There may be some among you who will fancy me afraid of all forms of shock and surprise, but throughout this tale I ask that you consider your own small demons that haunt even the strongest of constitutions. Within the confines of my comfortable existence, even there inside my own home, I have had occasion to confront the very fears that terrorize my soul, guided only by a simply glow.

The night that roiled over with anxiety began as many a night had for before. I had gently entered my bedroom, respecting the sound and safe  slumber that had visited my beloved. I soon found myself lulled to sleep by the gentle waves of evening showers flowing overhead. While I dreamed of times and people that had once occupied my waking mind, a deluging storm developed around me. Wind gusts shook all in their path and serpentine slivers of lightening illuminated the ever-darkening skies. I could not have imagined the swath of destruction that such a terribly sudden surge of wrathful energy would unleash upon my very surroundings. The Storm had come and, blessedly, gone.

Reports will vary as to the results, but I can provide a singularly emphatic example of its power. Quite simply, the Storm removed all semblance of illumination. Its Power had absorbed the very power that pulsed through the miles of wire that create a web-like cocoon within my walls. It is the Power to illuminate.

From beneath my door throbbed an interesting specter of sorts. A blue-white haze had seemed to take hold of the world beyond the boudoir. I quickly and quietly escaped from my sheets and bade my beloved to remain ensconced as I investigated.

Slowly – ever so slowly – did I open my bedroom door and, with equal care and silence did I slip past all follow the light as it wrapped around the corner of our hall towards the common room. Upon arriving I quickly turned the corner to face my fears head-on.

I was dumbfounded by what I had uncovered. My fears were at once realized and abated. For through the surrounding darkness did one beacon beckon. Within a vase-like table lamp, under a buff linen shade, I discovered my savior from bruised shins and midnight treachery. The Hunter Lamplighter Power Outage Light was charged with saving my sanity and it did so admirably.

I retreated to room and the more than loving embrace of my partner, secure in the knowledge that darkness was at bay thanks to the safety night of illumination. The break of day could wait.
